Even before the pandemic I came excited about the opportunity about the ability to work from anywhere. As a result, lately I have been sharing posts about the advantages of being a digital nomad. In my excitement I did realize others may not be as familiar with the term as I am. Recently this became clear when a family member asked me, “So, what is a digital nomad anyways?”.
Basically, a digital nomad is someone who has taken working from home to the next level. This being working from anywhere. Well, anywhere there is wifi, of course. (Until satellite internet becomes commonplace. More on that another time.) All in all, work that can be done from your home office (or couch, dining table) can be done anywhere. One of the best authors on this subject is Andy Sto.
Currently most digital nomads are self-employed. Needless to say most employers are not open to having their employees travel while working. After all, a significant number of businesses are still trying to wrap their head around allowing employees to work from home. Granted there are many risks to being self-employed. However, once you have some momentum (and cash flow) in your business, being a digital nomad can be worth it.
Travel While You Work
I first got a taste of this a couple of years ago. I was working for a friend of mine at the time. He was the member of an organization that was hosting a conference in San Antonio. For five days we worked during the day, and took in the sights during the evening. I spent the days working in my hotel room, the hotel restaurant, or a cafe in downtown San Antonio. Basically it was the same work on the same tablet when I was working in his office in Edmonton.
Have The Freedom To Help Family
In addition to international travel, being a digital nomad provides other advantages. Recently I spent a week in Peace River helping my father. I was able to spend my mornings working on my business, and spend my afternoons and evenings helping him.Fortunately I was able to do this on short notice. Needless to say, if I had been working for someone else I would not have been able to help him on such short notice.
